Pilates is excellent for building core strength
Pilates is a unique form of body conditioning that focuses on the strength and stability of the “core” whilst promoting controlled, flowing movement of the body. You may have heard a lot of talk about “core strength” and this really just means stability of the torso, so the area from your shoulders to your hips including your abdominals and your back! Pilates exercises focus on the strength and stability of your core muscles as well balancing strength and flexibility of your limbs. Through strengthening your core, your spine is better supported which means that your posture is much improved and you feel stronger, walk taller and simply move better.
Pilates really is a method of exercise for every body! It is a lifelong investment in your health and wellbeing, helping you strengthen your body and move well, preventing injuries and unnecessary wear and tear on your joints. It is a way of rebalancing your body from the stresses and strains of work, sport and life in general. Practising Pilates involves concentration, control and coordination which focuses the mind allowing you to switch off from the pressures of daily life and take some time out to relax.
Improve your posture, flexibility and more
Who does Pilates? Anybody who is looking to improve posture, muscle tone, flexibility, coordination and balance. Pilates exercises are tailored to suit the individual’s needs and are used by people who have not exercised for a long time, athletes looking to optimise their performance and everyone in-between! Pilates is hugely beneficial to people who have had injuries, especially neck or back problems and are looking to rehabilitate and prevent them from recurring. Many people come to Pilates following recommendations from their GP, physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor. Ante- and Post-Natal Pilates classes are very popular, helping to strengthen muscles that can become stretched and weakened during pregnancy, taking the pressure off the lower back making it easier to get your figure back after pregnancy. More and more men are discovering Pilates as a way to work on core strength and flexibility, with sportsmen from Cricket, Football and Rugby using Pilates as an integral part of their training programmes.
